The New York Jets are expected to sign another quarterback to at least push Mark Sanchez in training camp this year, but Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News is reporting that it probably won’t be Philadelphia Eagles young QB Nick Foles. The Arizona Wildcats product has a nice Jets connection after Mary Mornhinweg left the Eagles to join the Jets coaching staff as the new offensive coordinator, but Mehta tweeted today that the Jets aren’t interested in trading for Foles “at this point”.
Foles has a chance to be a franchise quarterback, but I doubt that is going to happen. He does deserve a shot with some team, and that team could still be Eagles (in fact, it will likely be in Philly) despite the fact that Foles probably won’t fit Chip Kelly’s scheme. The Eagles, though, still seem high on Foles, because they are offering up a kings ransom for the unproven 24-year-old.
They are reportedly asking for a first or second-rounder, and that’s something I highly doubt the Jets would pay up. Even if Matt Flynn‘s asking price is the same, he is probably better than Foles and also has a Jets connection (John Idzik). Flynn’s price tag will likely be lower than Foles’s bloated one, but I bet the Eagles decrease the price for Foles.
When that does happen, it is possible for the Jets to show interest in him. But I think the Jets best bet is to avoid trading for a young quarterback and instead go for a solid veteran on the free agent market. Matt Moore would be a great signing for Idzik and the Jets front office to make, and David Garrard would also make sense. I doubt the Jets will show interest in Nick Foles this offseason.
