Three key players on the New England Patriots in Rob Gronkowski, Danny Woodhead, and Chandler Jones sustained injuries in the 41-28 victory over the Houston Texans. Gronkowski has already been ruled out for the season after breaking his arm again, and he is reportedly set to undergo surgery today.
Not only did Gronk go down early in this one, but running back Danny Woodhead sustained an injury to his left thumb during the opening drive. He was seen on the sidelines with an ice pack, and it sounds like his injury isn’t serious. Even though the Pats have another top receiving back in Shane Vereen who can do some of what Woodhead does, Woodhead’s pass blocking in the backfield would be missed as well as the clutch dimension he brings to the Patriots. Vereen has plenty of talent, but I still think Woodhead is the better player. Beyond that, it sucks to see a guy hurt, especially a player like Woodhead.
In fact, Woodhead was injured on the team’s first snap of the game on offense after running the football.
Defensive end Chandler Jones injured his ankle late in the second quarter and did not return, and the loss of Jones would be a crushing one for the Patriots. The Pats pass rush is one of weaknesses of this team, and it would be a major weakness if they lose their starting RE. Beyond that, Jones is also a terrific run-stopping DE and brings a high amount of value to this team. We can only hope he is doing alright.
