San Francisco 49ers Director of Player Personnel Tom Gamble is one of the best General Managers available in a hungry market for new GMs, and the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars have asked the Niners for permission to interview Gamble due to their GM vacancies. The Jaguars and Jets had two of the worst GMs in the league, as the Jags parted ways with Gene Smith and the Jets dumped off Mike Tannenbaum.
One of the things that makes Gamble such an attractive candidate for potential suitors is that he has learned from one of the best GMs and player evaluators in the game in Trent Baalke.
Gamble may be a hot target, but the Jets and Jaguars aren’t exactly the best landing spots for a guy like Gamble who has plenty of options and is on a wining organization in San Francisco. The Carolina Panthers and San Diego Chargers are two other spots with GM vacancies, and they have far more talent than both the Jags and Jets. That’s especially true when you look at how poor the Jaguars were this past season and the fiasco that comes with being the Jets GM and working under Woody Johnson.
But Gamble could also have a big opportunity in turning around the Jets and making a huge name for himself. The Jets position has some flare to it, while the Jaguars position is one to stay away from unless if the money is too good to pass up. We’ll see how things move forward, because Gamble will surely have other teams pressing for him.
