Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has stated that he would like to give the new head coach the final say over all team personnel decisions, which is certainly an attractive bargaining chip for prospective candidates. Oregon Ducks head coach Chip Kelly stated that he would need to have almost complete control over personnel decisions, so the Browns could be an attractive landing spot for Kelly. Not many teams are willing to offer that, especially to an unproven head coach with no real NFL experience, so that’s something to keep an eye on.
Nate Ulrich tweeted that Haslam “thinks this is a very attractive job”.
The Browns are likely headed after a big name guy or somebody with high risk, high reward like Chip Kelly. It will be interesting to see which route they prefer, and Haslam has stated that he wants to hire a head coach to replace Pat Shurmur before bringing on a GM. That’s not a conventional approach, and it’s a quizzical one for Haslam to make when building a team.
This all makes it even more unlikely that Josh McDaniels will leave the New England Patriots, which is excellent news for Pats fans. He is happy in New England, and those rumors are coming to a screeching halt.
The Kansas City Chiefs have not officially made any moves on GM Scott Pioli, as owner Clark Hunt is still mulling over the former New England Patriots exec’s future with the Chiefs after firing another former Patriot in head coach Romeo Crennel. The Chiefs are probably looking for a big-name GM, and I doubt Pioli ends up keeping his job. I mean, Hunt can’t possibly keep him after all that’s happened this year and after firing Crennel.
