The Chicago Bears have reportedly asked the Denver Broncos for permission to interview rising offensive coordinator Mike McCoy for the recent head coaching vacancy after they fired Lovie Smith earlier today. This report comes from FOX Sports insider Jay Glazer, who describes McCoy as, “a very, very hot name right now”.
The Bears are already proactive in their search for finding the best coach available, and the goal is unsurprisingly to find the best offensive mind they can find. McCoy is a very innovative OC, and he deserves to be a hot name. The Bears could use him as a head coach, and he was one of the main reasons why the Broncos were able to make the whole Tim Tebow thing last year. People praised John Fox, but his job was doing the as difficult task of turning around the defense. He’s not a creative coach at all, but McCoy certainly is.
Chicago’s defense is already top notch, so the biggest need for them is finding a head coach who can work with Jay Cutler and help get things going better on offense after this year’s implosion down the stretch. Peyton Manning made McCoy’s job very easy this season, but I can assure you that McCoy was instrumental to the Broncos success this year. It is apparent that his reputation was deservedly built on his ability to keep a high octane offense and make the option work with Tebow at the helm.
