Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator is not only one of the most brilliant offensive minds in the game today; he is a hot head coaching candidate at this moment in time. He already has three interviews set up with the Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles for head coaching gigs to replace Romeo Crennel, Pat Shurmur, and Andy Reid respectively. Alex Marvez of FOX Sports was the first to break the big news.
Koetter would immediately help three dire offensive situations in Kansas City, Cleveland , and Philadelphia. The Chiefs would likely send incompetent offensive coordinator Brian Daboll on the way out to accommodate a much better play-caller in Koetter. Or, they could just decide to keep Daboll and allow Koetter to preside over him to mitigate Daboll’s short-comings as an OC. Crennel is clearly a better defensive mind than offensive mind, so Daboll had too much of a say over the offense this past season.
The Falcons coordinator has an interview with the Chiefs tomorrow, according to ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen. Hiring Koetter would be risky for the Chiefs, and it seems like some fans would prefer a more proven commodity and a big name head coach to bring the Chiefs back to playoff contention. I mean, it wasn’t too long ago when we were wondering if they could take down the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs.
With all the early interest already, it seems like Dirk Koetter is on track to nab a head coaching position. It seems weird to think that he was once an unheralded coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars a couple of years ago with Blaine Gabbert as his quarterback.
