Jacksonville Jaguars 25-year-0ld star wide receiver Cecil Shorts suffered another concussion Sunday afternoon against the New England Patriots after being the recipient of a jarring hit from Shorts. He went across the middle of the field and was met by the intimidating strong safety, who lowered his shoulder and knocked the ball loose. All five officials threw down yellow flags in response to the hit, as Chung was called for unnecessary roughness. Although I disagree with the premise of the call, there is no doubt that Shorts was hit extremely hard and I hope he is all right.
The main reason why this injury scares me so much is that it’s the second time recently that Shorts has suffered a concussion. Not only is it the second time he has been concussed, but his first game back from the concussion was in Week 15. The second-year deep threat has been a feel-good story this season, as he has risen up to produce as a No. 1 WR since coming out of nowhere. In 14 games this season, he has amassed 979 receiving yards.
Against the New England Patriots, Shorts did some damage with six receptions for 54 yards. The Jaguars have been dealing with concussions throughout the season, as fellow wideout Laurent Robinson and veteran linebacker Clint Session sustained severe concussions. That’s probably the reason why Shorts was concerned about the long-term health effects of his first concussion, and I doubt (in fact, I hope for his sake) that he plays next week.
Moreover, I just hope the injury isn’t too serious.
Guard Uche Nwaneri also left the game with a concussion, and let’s hope his injury is also minor.
