The worst possible outcome that could have transpired has been fulfilled, as New England Patriots rising threat Julian Edelman has been placed on the injured reserve after breaking his foot in the fourth quarter of the 23-16 victory over the Miami Dolphins. He has not only been a solid possession receiver and blocker for this team, but Edelman has also emerged as a big-play threat as a wideout and on special teams.
It looked like Edelman only suffered a severe foot sprain or a high ankle sprain, but he has broken his foot and will be out for the entire season. He already missed a huge chunk of the year with a broken hand, so it hasn’t been the best year in terms of health for Edelman. However, his fourth year in the NFL has yielded the most success on the field after two straight two-touchdown performances.
The Patriots have a better chance of retaining the cheaper Edelman than Wes Welker this offseason when both players’ contracts run out, and Edelman will likely come at a cheaper price due to the injuries this season.
But that doesn’t matter now, because the loss of Edelman for the entire year is a huge hit to the depth at the position. Donte’ Stallworth was brought back in as the No. 3 receiver in a wise move, but the Pats will have to get Visanthe Shiancoe more involved with Rob Gronkowski out as well.
