Former Alabama Crimson Tide star linebacker Jerrell Harris was seen in the New England Patriots locker room, and a locker has reportedly been set up for the rookie. According to ESPN Boston, Harris “has likely” been signed to the practice squad as the eighth and final member.
He previously worked out with the Patriots in early September after being released by the Atlanta Falcons at the end of training camp. Harris was a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad for a short period of time as well.
A highly touted recruit out of Alabama, Harris was well-regarded for his run-stopping ability and was ranked by Rivals as the third best at the position. In fact, only current Buffalo Bills LB Nigel Bradham and Kansas State star LB Arthur Brown were ranked higher.
Harris has elite size at 6’3″, 242 pounds and started his college career with the Crimson Tide as a defensive back before moving to linebacker. Last season, he recorded 29 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss in a career year. Although he doesn’t have much college production, Harris has talent- especially as a downhill run-stuffer- and potential. He was able to start five games for the best defense in college football, but this practice squad development project is solely untapped potential at this point.
