Brian Waters created one of the biggest storylines back in August when he failed to report to the New England Patriots in training camp after mulling retirement, leaving to another team, or playing for the Pats. Waters, who lives in Dallas, was offered more money to stay, but the future Hall of Famer never reported to training camp. This infuriated some Patriots fans, and his unwillingness to give a straight answer seemed out of character for the veteran right guard.
Waters is still an effective player even at this age, and most Pats fans viewed bringing him back as crucial to the play of the offense going forward. Before the season, the offensive line was a huge question mark despite the depth and talent on the interior. Needless to say, the Patriots aren’t missing Waters with the way players like Ryan Wendell have stepped up.
Greg Bedard tweeted that Waters will not be a free agent if he does not report to the team this season. He said, “His contract is tolled, or frozen”, meaning that Waters is still technically under contract. You have to think that he’s going to retire now, and it’s probably for the better given all the drama he has created.
But who knows what will happen for both parties going forward? Brian Waters’s next move could really be anything, and I would like to hear your thoughts on what will likely happen to Waters. Will he report, retire, or stay silent?
