The New England Patriots have listed the players who will be inactive for today’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, and there are no surprises on the list.
RB Shane Vereen- No sense in rushing him back from that foot injury, especially with Danny Woodhead in the fold. Vereen is a good pass-catcher, but Woodhead is better in that regard and is easily the best RB in blitz pick-up on the team. That’s the key against Daryl Washington, Adrian Wilson, and Kerry Rhodes who are used often as free blitzers. Smart move by the Pats to take Woodhead and rest Vereen.
TE Daniel Fells- With Michael Hoomananwanui on the team and mauling defenders as a run blocker, Fells can have the day off.
WR Greg Salas- No surprise here, but I really do want to see him in action at some point.
CB Alfonzo Dennard
DE Jake Bequette
DT Marcus Fortson
DE Justin Francis
The last four listed inactives are so unsurprising that there is no reason to describe their absences in detail.
Sebastian Vollmer was listed as questionable and is good to go, so it will be interesting to see if the Patriots limit him. He’s better rested and will be up against a better player in Calais Campbell as well as an edge rusher quite often, so he’s definitely going to receive more playing time today. Marcus Cannon really struggles against 3-4 OLBs.
The biggest news on the Pats inactive list is that right guard Dan Connolly has been left off of it, which means that his concussion was very minor. He was able to appear in the Mayo Bowl and practiced throughout the week. However, I expect to see some reps from Donald Thomas. It’s great to see that both Vollmer and Connolly are able to play against one of the top 3-4 DEs in the game in Calais Campbell.
