The New England Patriots have reportedly worked out quarterbacks Curtis Painter and Stephen McGee, with the latter QB holding a workout connection with former Pats QB Brian Hoyer. McGee and Hoyer both worked out with the New York Giants earlier this week.
Painter, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts, is somebody who fits the career backup mold which is what the Pats are looking for at this point. However, he is underwhelming in every sense of the word and throws a high amount of interceptions.
Meanwhile, McGee is a quarterback who struggles with his consistency but has talent. He is a strong-armed QB who fits a vertical offense with his arm, and he can also gain some yards on the ground. While McGee is inconsistent, he did not throw an interception in 82 career passing attempts while with the Dallas Cowboys.
However, McGee did fall out of favor this offseason in Dallas and was cut due to the signing of Kyle Orton. The Patriots are still looking for a potential No. 3 QB behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett as an insurance policy. McGee is more talented and has more upside than Painter, and a change of scenery could do him well. You can never have too much talent, but the Pats might want to go for more of a known commodity in Painter as their insurance policy.
