One of the most important players on the New England Patriots going into this season is right tackle Sebastian Vollmer, because the drop off from him to second-year tackle Marcus Cannon is enormous. Vollmer needs to stay healthy for the entire season, but that’s not going to be easy for a veteran who has been struggling with back problems for his entire career.
Vollmer might not even be able to play in today’s opener against the Tennessee Titans and is listed as questionable due to his lower back. While he did play in practice this week, he was limited and was out for the large part of the Patriots preseason.
With Vollmer’s status up in the air, the Tennessee Titans might start planning more blitzes on the right side. LE Derrick Morgan is trying to live up to his first-round potential, and it would lend to a battle of two young players trying to prove themselves on the right side if Vollmer doesn’t play.
Let’s just hope that our All-Pro right tackle can play in this one, because Cannon is far too inexperienced at the tackle position and struggled mightily in the preseason as a pass blocker. The good thing is that he won’t be lined up against Kamerion Wimbley (that’s Nate Solder’s task), but the Titans could always just switch up and place Wimbley at left end to take advantage of Cannon.
Vollmer’s injury status of “questionable” is self-explanatory; it gives us a lot of questions about how the offensive line will fair out against a solid Titans defensive line.
