The New England Patriots worked out veteran tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. yesterday, but the injury prone TE did indeed pass his physical, per Adam Schefter. This comes in contrast to initial reports from other sources.
By the way, take a moment to laugh at the idiots who are like “What are the Patriots doing? Why is Bill Belichick looking at another tight end?”. Yeah, some people need to realize that there is something called an emergency list in the NFL, because every team formulates a list of players who they are thinking of signing if somebody gets injured.
Winslow is one of those guys for the Patriots, so it was always apparent that the Patriots wouldn’t sign him. However, it is encouraging to see that Winslow passed his physical, and I believe his supposed decline is overstated. Sure he is worse than he was two years ago due to age, but he can still be an effective No. 2 TE in this league and had a rough year with Josh Freeman at the helm. Freeman’s a quality quarterback, but he had a disappointing season and over-targeted Winslow when he needed “help” (when pressured and such) which was far too often.
In other news, the Buffalo Bills have named Tyler Thigpen their No. 2 quarterback behind Ryan Fitzpatrick over Tarvaris Jackson (for now), while former Patriot BenJarvus Green-Ellis is getting healthy again in time for a rivalry duel against the Baltimore Ravens without backup Bernard Scott to help him out.
