A few key New England Patriots players who have been injured have returned today in joint practice sessions between the Patriots and their upcoming preseason foes, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Rookie cornerback Alfonzo Dennard has finally returned, and veterans Daniel Fells and Sebastian Vollmer are both back after being activated from the PUP list recently. It’s great to see Vollmer back, as Marcus Cannon struggled in the first two preseason games and was constantly beaten by Rob Ninkovich in training camp.
Other players who are back include fullback Spencer Larsen (fighting for a roster spot after missing the last 12 practices) and solid rookie safety Tavon Wilson (missed the past two practices with a minor injury).
I’m elated to see Dennard back on the field, and I believe he will make the team’s 53-man roster. By the way, I will have my projected 53-man roster up a little bit later today. Fellow rookie Jeff Demps is in pads for the first time and has been returning kicks for the Patriots.
Patrick Chung, Matt Kopa, Visanthe Shiancoe, Jabar Gaffney, Gerard Warren, and Tracy White were not there during the first joint practice session. It is concerning to see that Shiancoe is not there, because he is currently on the outside looking in on the roster bubble. He needs to be on the field in order to make the roster, and things are looking bleaker with every day his hamstring causes him to be out.
