Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill is set to start tonight, according to CBS announcer Dick Stockton, who will be calling the game. The famous announcer divulged this piece of information on 790 The Ticket, and here is a tweet from The Ticket’s Marc Hochman.
David Garrard’s injury has made him pretty much a non-factor in the Dolphins quarterback situation at this point, so it’s between Tannehill and veteran Matt Moore. While Tannehill has looked fantastic and poised so far this preseason, Moore has been subpar and has been outplayed by the rookie so far in training camp.
New Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin has taken notice, and Tannehill has a big chance to impress tonight against another NFC South foe in the Carolina Panthers. He had a big game in the team’s preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dolphins lost, but Tannehill was terrific in a 14-21 game with 167 passing yards and a touchdown.
The team is hesitant, as it should be, with starting a rookie quarterback who was supposedly raw, but that rawness has just looked like poise so far. It’s early to tell after one preseason game, but a second big performance from Tannehill could go a long way in helping to give the Texas A&M product the starting gig. He has looked much better than Moore, and the distance between both QBs could distance even further depending on how tonight’s game goes. Tannehill is of course familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman’s offense, as the former TAMU head coach helped lead Tannehill to a successful 2011 season.
I like Matt Moore, but I don’t see the sense in starting him this season if Tannehill plays well in this game. At first I was a doubter, but the former Aggie is doing everything to prove me wrong.
