After weighing the several options that they had, the New England Patriots have decided to waive injured linebacker Dane Fletcher. A lock to make the roster before he tore his ACL in the first preseason game, Fletcher will be placed on the injured reserve if he clears waivers after the 24-hour period and is not claimed by another team.
The Patriots elected not to leave him on the 90-man roster until the 27th of August, when the roster gets cut down to 75 players. Instead, by waiving Fletcher, the Pats clear out another spot on the 90-man roster and will hope that nobody else claims him.
But that happens, and the Patriots recently pulled that move by claiming New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard off of waivers. The Giants thought that nobody would want to claim a player who is out for a year due to a knee injury, but they were certainly wrong about that. Could revenge be in order for the Giants? I mean, they don’t exactly have a full house at linebacker.
Hopefully Dane Fletcher clears waivers and remains a Patriot, because he is one of the most versatile players on this defense. He can play on all downs, at all linebacker positions (this is a great asset to have on the Patriots), and he has even played at defensive end.
