New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman was arrested early Tuesday morning on charges of indecent assault and battery for allegedly groping a woman at a night club in Back Bay. Edelman pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on his own recognizance. He didn’t speak at his court arraignment or after the hearing. He did stop to sign some fan’s helmet outside the courthouse, amazingly. I’m not sure that’s the time to sign autographs, and that fan may not have much in that autograph if Edelman is eventually released. You can see Edelman in court and his mugshot (tell me he’s not intoxicated) by clicking HERE.
Bill Belichick had no comment and the team didn’t have much to say either.
The Patriots simply released the following:
The Patriots are aware of the reports regarding Julian Edelman and will defer any comment to his representatives at this time.
Julian Edelman’s agent, Don Yee, said in a statement that the charges will be fought in court:
The charges will be fought vigorously within the court system, instead of a rush to judgment elsewhere. We have no further comment beyond that.
It will be interesting to see if the Patriots (and Commissar Goodell) will wait to see how the court proceedings play out or if they move to suspend/fine Edelman before a verdict is reached. I’m going to reserve my judgment for the time being, but going by athletes’ history in these matters, it doesn’t look good. Hopefully, things will work out, for Edelman’s sake. If the allegations are true, adios muchachos.
