Yahoo! Sports writer Charles Robinson has released a report detailing the involvement of Nevin Shapiro in providing illicit benefits to Miami Hurricane football and basketball players. He names several athletes, including the Patriots’ Vince Wilfork, as receiving cash gifts and other benefits from Shapiro, who is now in jail for a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.
Other notable football names in the list of those who received some kid of gifts from Shapiro include Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, D.J. Williams, Kellen Winslow, Jr., and Jonathon Vilma. I’m not sure what, if anything, could come of this NFL-wise, but it certainly puts a damper on the start of the season.
Vince Wilfork is one of the true nice guys on the Patriots. He is actively involved in charitable events and is a leader in the locker room. He’s been a stand-up guy since joining the team and this is truly disappointing news. This is just another example of a practice that is likely rampant throughout the NCAA, with Ohio State University and USC most recently coming under fire.
Not to make an excuse whatsoever, but one thing to keep in mind is that early in Wilfork’s college career (2002), he lost not one, but both of his parents within 5 months of each other. That’s something to consider when trying to wrap your head around all of this.
