Patriots to Release OLB Tully Banta-Cain

According to reports, the Patriots will release OLB Tully Banta-Cain. Banta-Cain had surgery to repair an abdominal tear on Friday which put him out of action for about 4-5 weeks. This was lingering from the 2010 season and showed poor judgment on Banta-Cain’s part not taking care of it sooner. Whether that’s the reason for the release I can’t say.

You’ve got to believe that this opens the door for a free agent DE/OLB signing once free agency begins. Options to fill Banta-Cain’s spot include Jason Babin, Manny Lawson, Ray Edwards, Matthias Kiwanuka, Travis LaBoy, and Matt Roth.
