NFL.com analyst Pat Kirwan has ranked the top 18 (that’s a weird number for a “top” list, no?) undrafted rookie free agents, and Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich is at the top of the list. Recall that Herzlich came back from cancer to play his senior year, and while he wasn’t 100%, he still played well. Well enough, most thought, to at least get drafted. Prior to missing a season due to his battle with cancer, Herzlich was projected to be a first-round draft pick. Here’s Kirwan’s take on Herzlich:
Herzlich battled back from cancer. He is not 100 percent yet, but played well enough to be drafted. He will make a team and could play Mike or Sam linebacker. He would have been a first-round pick if he came out before he got the cancer. He had 11 interceptions and 40 plays behind the line of scrimmage in college.
Back in May, a poll was run here at Musket Fire asking fans if the Patriots should sign Herzlich. The fans overwhelmingly voted “yes”, 98% to 2%. That poll has not closed if you have yet to vote. I wanted the Pats to draft Herzlich, so you know my feelings on the subject. He could help solve the puzzle at outside linebacker, the Patriots’ most glaring need. Once free agency begins, expect Herzlich to be one of the first snatched up, hopefully by the Patriots.
