I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many “Top” whatever lists constructed in a single offseason before this one. Thank you, NFL lockout. Alas, there has been yet another “Top NFL Corners” list put together. Pat Kirwan from NFL.com has made another positions list by grouping players in groups of five. Devin McCourty, with just one NFL season under his belt, comes in at 7th overall on Kirwan’s list. Here’s Kirwan’s take on McCourty:
Was named to the Pro Bowl as a rookie after picking off seven passes last season. He follows in the footsteps of Ty Law and Asante Samuel as zone corners with a knack for finding the ball.
Of course, this isn’t the first recognition and honor McCourty has received in his first year in the NFL.
Both ESPN and USA Today have put Devin McCourty in their power rankings of corner backs. ESPN ranked McCourty as the 8th-best corner in the NFL while USA Today ranked McCourty as 7th-best. Of course, those are minor pats-on-the-back compared with the Pro Bowl honors he received in his first NFL season. If he can continue on this path, sky’s the limit and space is the place for McCourty. The NFL lockout doesn’t help his progression, but he does have the benefit of an NFL season under his belt, unlike the incoming rookies. McCourty’s development will be one of the storylines throughout the NFL season.
