One of the biggest plays in last night’s game, and probably one of the funniest of the season, was Dan Connolly’s 71-yard kick-off return late in the second quarter. The play was huge in that it put the Patriots in position to pull to within 3 points of the Packers before the half, but that seems to have gotten lost in the sheer ridiculousness of it. The kick-off return was even featured as the last play of Monday Night Football’s “C’Mon, Man!” feature. The Packers squibbed the ball to prevent a big return by Brandon Tate, but instead gave up a big return to the Patriots’ starting right guard. The return was mostly due to poor tackling by the Packers’ special teams, but the slight, um, “cut” that Connolly made and a big stiff arm helped to extend his return. The 71-yard return is the longest for any offensive lineman in NFL history since that was being tracked in 1994. If you want to re-live one of the plays of the year, click here. Tom Brady’s reaction as the return unfolds, as you can see towards the end of the video, is priceless. If you’d like to vote for Dan Connolly as the Player of the Game (or someone else), click here.
