2007 Draft re-do

Bucky Brooks over at NFL.com has a fun article to read where he re-drafts players from the 2007 NFL Draft based on what they have been able to accomplish so far in the NFL. In 2007, the Patriots drafted Safety Brandon Meriweather at #24 overall. In his re-do of the draft, he has the Patriots sticking with Meriweather at #24 overall. Here is what he has to say about the pick:

Meriweather’s unique versatility has been an ideal fit in the Patriots’ hybrid scheme. After Meriweather earned his first Pro Bowl bid, Bill Belichick and Co. agree.”

Here are players that he has drafted after Meriweather, meaning they are “available” when the Patriots make their pick:

25. Panthers – S Tanard Jackson

26. Cowboys – LB Anthony Spencer

27. Saints – CB Aaron Ross

28. 49ers – LB Paul Posluszny

29. Ravens – TE Brent Celek

30. Chargers – LB Lawrence Timmons

31. Bears – TE Zach Miller

32. Colts – WR Steve Breaston

My question to you is: Would you rather have any of these players over Meriweather? Meriweather has been solid though he still has some work to do in being disciplined on the field. He was caught out of position a few times this season, most notably for big plays against the Saints. You could probably make a case for Spencer due to the lack of depth at the OLB position. However at the time, the Pats had just signed Adalius Thomas and still had Mike Vrabel, though I had been clamoring for youth at linebacker since 2005. Without Meriweather, the safety position may have just had James Sanders/Brandon McGowan and rookie Pat Chung starting last season. It’s fun to think about the possibilities, but I would have to say that the Pats made the right selection here.
