Pats select another Gator in the 4th round

The Patriots seemed to look for the best player available and drafted Florida TE Aaron Hernandez at 113 overall. Hernandez was a possible target for them in Round 2 if they missed out on Rob Gronkowski. Hernandez is more of a pass-catching threat than a blocker and has a lot of athleticism. Scouts have him as more of an H-back than an on-the-line tight end.SI’s Peter King likes what the Patriots have done to reload the TE position. He tweeted the following: Five weeks ago, Pats had 0 NFL tight ends. Today, they have Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Alge Crumpler. Nice remaking of needy position.

Here’s NFL.com’s overview on Aaron Hernandez:

Hernandez is a slightly undersized tight end that will best fit schemes that use an H-back as well as the traditional tight end. He is athletic and shows good downfield speed when running vertical routes and does a good job of adjusting to balls when thrown slightly off target. He has natural hand-eye coordination and consistently reaches out to pluck the ball. He can struggle when physical linebackers line up over him to hinder his release and is more effective when lined up off the line of scrimmage. He is not a very strong or physical blocker in line and takes questionable angles when blocking at the second level.”

Aaron Hernandez is also the third Florida Gator the Patriots have drafted so far. Yesterday, they drafted DE/OLB Jermaine Cunningham and ILB Brandon Spikes in Round 2. Who’s next? I guess I need to watch more Florida Gators games if I’m going to look for potential Patriots…
