Patriots fill vacant roster spot

The New England Patriots have been punter-less since the close of the season. That is no longer the case. The Patriots announced today that they signed punter David King. Don’t know who he is? That’s probably because he has not played in the NFL, but he has played professional football – Australian football. I’m not sure what the differences are between Australian rules football and good old American football, but King traveled to the U.S. in 2009 to learn the American game and sign with an NFL team. He has reached that goal.

The Patriots are likely going to sign at least one other punter, be it a rookie or a veteran free agent to compete for the position in camp. Last year’s punter, Chris Hanson, remains unsigned. There are several free agent punters on the market, including Mitch Berger, Craig Hentrich, and Hunter Smith.
