Reed unlikely to sign, Crumpler officially on board

Early in free agency, the Patriots hosted UFA WR Josh Reed, who had played in Buffalo. Reed would help fill the role of Wes Welker until Welker returned from injury, and then likely would be a solid third option behind Randy Moss and Welker. However, Mike Reiss from ESPNBoston.com is reporting that Reed’s agent Ben Dogra has said that it is highly unlikely that Reed will sign with New England. Dogra adds that it is not a good fit for Josh Reed role-wise. The Reed camp believes that he is a solid slot receiver and when Wes returns, Reed’s role would be diminished. They are probably right, and you can’t really blame Josh. He wants to go to a team and play a solid role on that team, something he wasn’t able to do much of on QB-deprived Buffalo. Scratch Reed off the list of possible free agent pick-ups.

In other news, it is finally official that the Pats have signed TE Alge Crumpler. You can read my previous post about what he can contribute to the team by clicking here.
