Leigh Bodden staying in New England?

by AFC East

There are reports coming out of ESPN that CB Leigh Bodden has an agreement in principle to stay in New England. Earlier, I reported that Bodden visited Houston, but it looks like now that he will be remaining with the Patriots. Not so fast says Bodden’s agent Alvin Keels:

Reports of Leigh Bodden re-signing with the Patriots are not true and premature at best. Leigh is still evaluating his options. Leigh has always indicated his desire to return to New England, but nothing is official and probably will not be until [Tuesday] at the earliest.”

Sooooo I guess tomorrow they will finalize the contract and we’ll get an announcement? Usually when there’s an agreement in principle, the total numbers and years are in place but the amount of guaranteed money is still in negotiation. If Bodden does return, the Patriots can work on building depth in the secondary through draft picks and mid-tier free agents while putting more focus on other needs (linebacker). Bodden was their best cover man last year and got 5 picks- not bad considering their was no pass rush. I anticipate that he will start along with now second-year man Darius Butler. The Pats have kept what was right with the team so far. Now it’s time to address what was wrong (LB, RB, WR).
