Patriots Mock Draft Roundup

The 2010 NFL mock draft season has begun and casual fans have joined the “experts” in trying to predict where college’s best NFL prospects will go. I don’t like trying to put together a mock draft until after the Scouting Combine where the prospects actually run drills and guys unexpectedly shoot up and down the boards based on workouts and interviews. Add to that the fact that we don’t know what needs teams will fill in free agency, these mocks don’t mean too much at the moment. However, it’s still fun to look at and wonder, and I have to admit, I’m as addicted as any football fan and I still check them all out. Here’s a sampling of where “experts” and some of the more notable fan sites have the Pats going in the first round on draft day this year. The Patriots have the 22nd overall pick. NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks: Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson

Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks: Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas

ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr.: Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson

NBC Sports’ Evan Silva: Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas

NFLDraftScout.com’s Rob Rang: Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

NFLDraftScout.com’s Chad Reuter: Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida

FootballsFuture.com: Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

WalterFootball.com: Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma

Draftsite.com: Brandon Graham, OLB, Michigan

TheFootballExpert.com: Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama

As one would expect, the draft experts are going defense-heavy for the Patriots, with only one mock that I looked at having the Patriots taking an offensive player (TE Jermaine Gresham). However, I wouldn’t overlook C.J. Spiller, RB from Clemson as an offensive possibility. I was surprised that a few mocks have the Patriots taking Sergio Kindle at 22. I would love to see that happen, but as of right now, I think Kindle will go sooner, so the Pats would have to trade up to get him. If Kindle does fall to them at 22, I think that would be a major steal in the draft. There’s so much that can happen between now and the draft that this will probably change multiple times, but this is pretty fun, no? Let the mocking begin!
