New wrinkle in DC search

The Denver Broncos, coached by former Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, is now in the defensive coordinator hunt after firing Mike Nolan. I don’t quite understand why Nolan was fired. The defense was very strong early and did kind of slip, but I wouldn’t call it a Patriots-esque slip. McDaniels wants very similar things in a DC as Belichick does, and wants to run a similar system. Therefore, they will be trying to snag similar candidates along with Miami, who is also searching for a DC. Nolan is already interviewing for the Miami job and is the favorite to land that position and former Pats DC Dean Pees is considered to be a favorite for the DC job in Denver.

The hiring of Pees in Denver isn’t at first glance much of an issue to the Patriots, but it certainly could be. It’s highly possible that Pees may look to pluck some assistants from here that could impact how Belichick fills vacant positions here. If Pees plucks Pepper Johnson and/or Matt Patricia, both candidates for the DC job in New England, Belichick will have to look elsewhere for a DC and/or new assistants. If Patricia gets promoted to DC, the thought process goes that Pepper will be promoted to linebackers coach, Patricia’s current position. Though McDaniels could throw a monkey wrench into the whole process. I also wouldn’t be surprised if McDaniels hires either Matt Patricia or Pepper Johnson to be the defensive coordinator in Denver.

This coordinator search just got a lot more interesting…
