“Wow I’m Impressed,” Until You Do The Math!

Roger Goodell-Photo from pegasusnews.comI just wanted to take a few moments and comment on an interesting story I came upon.  It’s been announced that NFL commissioner Roger  Goodell is taking a pay-cut.  With the economy’s outlook becoming bleaker with each passing day.  Seeing someone in his position taking a stand and lowering his salary is a welcoming sign.

Goodell was scheduled to make $11 million for this past season from both salary and bonuses.  He volunteered to take a twenty percent pay reduction.  Initially when you read or hear he’s taking a twenty percent cut you think “Wow I’m Impressed,” until you do the math!  And realize he’ll still make close to $8.8 million for the year.  Is his job worth $8.8 million for one year?  Not in my book!

Now don’t get me wrong I know he’s done a great job turning the league around.  Trust me he deserves to be paid for what he’s done for the NFL.  Anyone who comes in and who’s had to deal with the image problem of the league, and it’s drug problem, deserves to get paid.  But not that much and definitely not in today’s economy.  He not only has to deal with the problems mentioned, but he also has to “babysit the players” who think they’re above the law.

Getting paid is one thing.  No commissioner from any of the  four major sports in this country should be making more than the President of the United States.  The President deals with numerous issues throughout the country including:  Homelessness, welfare, education, human rights, and economic strains.   However, the most important issue that he has to deal with is WAR!!!

Now compare the President of the United States to a commishioner in any one of the four major sports, who deserves the higher salary?
